Barn Styles (more info to be added shortly)

 

1. Bank Barns

- rectangular barn with two levels

- if there was no hill present a "bank" was created

- ground floor is the stables / upper floor is typically for the hay storage

 

2. Pole Barns/Post & Frame Barn

- logs or planed timber

 

 

3. English Barns

- could be made of log or frame (the smaller barn is a pole barn)

- basic roof was a gable roof.

 

4. Dutch Barns/Gambrel Barn

- hipped gable

- gambrel roof

 

 

5. Silos *when Ontario farming changed from wheat to livestock

- began to appear in the 1870's, providing food for the livestock

- storage for grains
