"Some tumultuous proceedings have recently taken place throughout the county of Kent, arising from the outrageous conduct of agricultural mobs of the lower classes going about demolishing the threshing machines of the farmers. A body of men, amounting to upwards of 200 in number, lately assembled at the respective residences of Sir Henry Oxenden, Sir Henry Tucker Montresor, Mr. Kelcey, Mr. Holtum, and Mr. Sankey, farmers, and violently broke into their barns, where they destroyed the thrashing-machines they found in them respectively. At the adjouned meeting of the magistrates and other gentlemen of East Kent, held on the 12th of Oct. at Canterbury, the High Sheriff in the chair, it was resolved to offer a reward of 500l. for the discovery of these incendiaries. The Lords of the Treasury have also offered a reward of 100l. for the discovery and apprehension of the offenders who set fire to and burnt the barns and cornstacks belonging to the Rev. Mr. Price, of Lyminge, on the night of 5th Oct." The Gentlemen's Magazine 1830

...The different parishes communicate by beacon fires, and there seems a regular though secret head throughout the country. Threatening letters, signed "Swing," do not always precede the conflagrations. Machinery is almost wholly discontinued, and tithes generally lowered, but there is little return to peace and regularity. Dragoons are stationed in different parts of the country, who have interfered with good effect in meetings where tumult was threatened. Nightly patrols are established, and a day-watch set, but still no discovery has been made of the incendiaries, no stop put to the dangerous musters of men. A most respectable meeting of the men of Kent was held at Canterbury o the 6th, when it was resolved that the persons present would co-operate with the magistrates, land holders, and tenantry, in resisting outrages, alleviating distress, and restoring the independence of the peasantry.

A Royal proclamation, dated Nov. 23, offers to informers a reward of 50l. for every person convicted as authors or perpetrators of the outrages, and 500l. for the conviction of an incendiary. The counties of Wilts, Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hants, and Berks, are alone mentioned; but the mischief is spreading, particularly in Huntingdon and Cambridge shires.

*William Piers Ormerod, Esq. F.R.C.S.

June 10. At Canterbury, aged 42, W. P. Ormerod, Esq.

The deceased the fifth son of George Ormerod, D.C.L., F.R.S., and of Sarah, daughter of John Latham, M.D., F.R.S., was born in London on May 14, 1818, and educated at Rugby. From the tutelage of Dr. Arnold he went, in 1835, to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, where he was articled to Mr. Stanley; and he soon began in earnest the work of his life under the eye of his uncle, Dr. P.M. Lantham, and with the guiding friendship of Mr. Paget. In 1839 he was most highly distinguished at the annual examination for prizes. In 1840 he discharged the duties of house-surgeon under Mr. Lawrence, and an essay embodying some of the results of his observations during this period was honoured with the Jacksonian prize of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842, and in that year he was appointed one of the demonstrators of anatomy.

His incessant labours in the wards and the dissecting-rooms began after a while to tell injuriously on his health, and he was compelled in 1844 to resign his appointment and retire to the country. The first results of his return health appeared in 1846, when he published a volume of Clinical Surgery which he had found leisure to arrange; and in the summer of the same year he established himself in practice at Oxford, where he was shortly afterward elected surgeon to the Radcliffe Infirmary.

For about two years he filled this situation most honourably and happily in the friendship of his colleagues, Dr. Greenhill and Dr. Arcland, when, in December 1848, after a period of great hurry and anxiety, he was seized with an epileptic fit; and, the fits continuing, he was compelled to resign this appointment also, and to retire from practice altogether. The last ten years of his life were spent at Canterbury where he lived with his friends, Mr. Reid and Mr. Andrews; and he died at the house of the latter, the immediate cause of his death being haemorrhage from laceration of a branch of the middle meningeal artery; the skull having been fractured by a fall at the beginning of an epileptic fit.

Though he had been shut out from the course of life for which he had so very zealously prepared himself, yet his energy and industry never flagged, and he had always a bright prospect before him of some useful purpose to which his knowledge might be applied - a cherished hope that he might serve his Saviour on earth as a medical missionary. But his bright future was not to be here. Unconscious himself of the gradual failure of his mind and memory, he lived cheerfully on till he was suddenly and painlessly removed after a few hours of insensibility.

Besides the "Clinical Collections in Surgery" already noticed, Mr. Ormerod was the author of "Questions in Anatomy for the Use of the Students of St. Bartholomew's Hospital," of a paper "On the Sanitary Condition of Oxford," published by the Ashmolean Society, of "A Few Plain Words on Cholera," and of several articles in the "British and Foreign Medical Review." He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and of the Medico-Chirurgical Society.

Death, at Queen's-gate-terr., Anna Maria, widow of James Bradshaw, esq., M. P. for Canterbury. This lady is known to the elder generation of play-goers as Miss M. Tree. IN the old days of English ballad-opera she stood in the highest rank of her profession, and in the musical adaptations of Shakespeare's plays, which were common many years ago, she was frequently associated with Miss Stephens. Her retirement fromt he stage, consequent on her marriage with Mr. Bradshaw, occured so long since that to modern amateurs of misic she will seem to belong to a remote past, and to exist only in honourable tradition. Thirteen years have elapsed since the death of Mr. Bradshaw, and she has left one child, a daughter, who is married to Mr. H. Langley, formerly of the 2nd Guards. Mrs. Bradshaw was the eldest sister of Mrs. Charles Kean (Times). Gentlemen's Magazine 1862

Saturday, September 15th, 1894, The Kentish Observer - Death of Mrs. George Furley. We announce with sincere regret the death of Mrs. Furley, the wife of Mr. George Furley, J.P., of Barton Fields, Canterbury, which occurred on Tuesday morning. The deceased lady, who was seventy-eight years of age, had been an invalid for a considerable time past, but it was only quite recently that her condition became such as to cause grave anxiety. During Sunday and Monday she lay in an unconscious state and passed away almost impreceptibly about nine o'clock on Tuesday morning, to the intense grief of her husband and family, for all of whom the deepest sympathy is felt by a very wide circle of friends and acquantances and, we feel sure, by the citizens generally.
