~ BURGATE WARD ~ CANTERBURY Undated Ward List: Burgate - The National Archives CC/JQ/380/2 1581 1751 - Burgate is sometimes called St. Michael's gate, because it is contiguous to a church dedicated to that archangel. Through this gate lies the road to Sandwhich, &c. and to St. Martin's. In this ward is kept the market twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays; plentifully serving this city, and the neighbouring parts, with all sorts of provision, especially poultry; for which it was famous in ancient times.
