~ ELIZA JANE TERRY ~

CANTERBURY

Eliza Jane was born on September 29th, 1852, in Canterbury. Her parents John and Eliza baptised her at St. Alphege church on October 17th of that year.

__

In 1871, when Eliza was 19, she was working for the Warr family in Canterbury as a general domestic servant, the family had four girls under the age of 8 and one boy. She was living with the family at 15 Mercery Lane. Thomas Warr was an agent for sewing machines, etc.

The building with the green paint is No. 15 Mercery Lane

On March 4, 1877, when Eliza Jane was 24, she married Francis Breauton Thompson in Canterbury. Francis and Eliza were married
at the Register Office. The couple’s witnesses were a Mr. George Simmonds and an Elizabeth Robinson. The marriage record shows Eliza and Francis were living at 3 Lime Grove, Old Dover Road, in Canterbury. I assume that they were both working for the same family. Francis was working as a Coachman/Domestic Service employee. Eliza was working as a Domestic Service employee. Eliza’s parents, also moved to 11 Old Dover Road sometime between 1871 and 1881.

Francis was born about 1855, in Bermondsey, Surrey. His father, Francis Broughton Thompson was born in London, and was a Timber Merchant. He was listed as a Firewood Dealer in the 1846 Post Office Directory, Bermondsey.

Marriage March 27, 1852 of Francis Broughton THOMPSON, off full age, widower, Timber Merchant, of Bermondsey, father William Thompson, Timber Merchant to Susan FRANCIS, off full age, spinster, of Prospect Row, father John Francis, Farmer, married at the Parish Church, St. Mary Newington, in the county of Surrey.

1861 - Thompson Family

Francis B. Thompson - head - Age 41 - Timber Dealer, Employing 4 Men - Born -
Oxfordshire? (The transcription on the census is in question, and on another census I have
him being born in London).
Susan Thompson - wife - Age 42 - Born - Romford, Essex (on another census they
transcribed it as Bamford, Essex)
Mary A. Thompson (?) - Daughter - Unmarried - Age 18 - Born in Bermondsey, Surrey
(no doubt that one of these transcriptions is wrong, as they wouldn’t name both daughters
the same, and it’s most likely this one is incorrect).
Francis Thompson - Son - Age 6 - Born in Bermondsey, Surrey
Mary A. (Alice) Thompson - Daughter - Age 4 - Born in Bermondsey, Surrey (This
would fit the Mary Alice above that married William Hayward Elliott, as her birth would be
about 1856).
Mary Gilmore - Female - Age 13 - General Servant - Born in Bermondsey, Surrey
The family was living at 65 Wood Yard House, Paradise Street, Rotherhithe
(Ecclesiastical District - Christchurch)

In 1871 Francis was living with his father and mother Susan at 88 New Kent Road in St. Saviour Southwark, he was 16. There was also an Edmund Durrant (27) living with them, he was listed as Francis Sr’s nephew, he was a Bookseller Clerk born in Essex.

Francis Broughton Thompson Sr. passed away at the age of 52 in 1872, in St. Saviour, five years before Francis and Eliza Jane were married.

Sometime between 1877 and 1881, Eliza and Frank moved to London. In 1881 they were living at 30 Rounton Road in London with Frank’s mother Susan Thompson. Frank was working as a Railway Guard, and Susan, his mother was listed as Independent. Eliza and Frank had no children at this time.

There are 48 birth records for Thompson babies from December 1881 until December 1890. These records would have to be checked for possible children. I searched for Eliza and Francis in the 1891 Census, but could not find them. So I started looking for the possible death of Eliza. I found a death of an Eliza Jane Thompson (age 37) at the end of the year in 1890, in Mile End. I was fairly certain this was her. Her age was right, and I had also found the death of a Susan Thompson (the name of Francis’ mother) in Mile End, London around the same time. I sent away for the death certificate of Eliza assuming this was her. It turns out that this was not our Eliza Jane. This Eliza Jane Thompson was the wife of a John Hunt Thompson (a Dock Messenger), and she died of a hemorrhage at childbirth. So I went searching once again, and I did find a death of an Eliza Thompson age 38 in the Spring of 1891, in Canterbury (vol 2a, page 575), which I believe might be our Eliza. But why was she in Canterbury?

Eliza and Francis were living in London in 1881, so I’m not sure why she was back in Canterbury. Francis might have passed away, and Eliza decided to move home. I did search for a death record for Francis but could not find one. Maybe there was no work for them in London.

I finally received the correct death certificate for Eliza Jane Thompson, female, age 38 years. She was noted as the wife of Frances Thompson, Railway Guard. Eliza died of Malignant Diseases of the Peritoneum.

She passed away on December 31st, 1890, in St. Paul’s, Canterbury. This address is where George and Amelia Terry were living in 1889 - 1891. George Thomas Terry was present at her death at 3 Love Lane. Eliza’s death was registered on January 2, 1891. I assume that she had been living with them at the time. Her husband Francis Thompson was not living with George and Amelia in 1891 when the census was taken. He might have gone back to London.

I couldn’t seem to find a Frank/Francis Thompson, widow in the 1891 or 1901 census records. If he was still alive and had any children, he might have remarried before then, or possibly moved across the ocean for a fresh start.

I did make contact with a gentlemen researching the Thompson family (he had posted a query on the web). It looks like his relative “Mary Alice” is the sister of Francis. She married a William Hayward Elliott at the Drummond Road Baptist Chapel in Bermondsey in 1874. She was living at Spa Road at the time of her marriage, she was born about 1856.
