~ HENRY WILLIAM TERRY ~

CANTERBURY

Henry William Terry was born on May 7, 1856, and baptised on June 8th, by his parents, John and Eliza at St. Alphege church in Canterbury.

__

In 1871 when he was 14 he was working as an Errand boy, and was living with his parents in Black Friars. He moved to London sometime before the Fall of 1880, possibly with his sister Eliza and her husband Francis Thompson.

Henry married Elisabeth Louisa Watson on December 19th, 1880, at Holy Trinity (Knightsbridge) in the Parish of St. Georges Hanover Square, Middlesex. He would have been 24 and Elisabeth would have been 21 at the time. Elizabeth was born in Moulton, Lincolnshire in the Spring of 1859. Their occupations are listed as Confectioner and Cook.

Henry was living at St. George’s Place, and Elizabeth was living at 102? Lounder? Terrace. Elisabeth’s fathers name is Henry Watson, and he was a farmer. The two witnesses at their wedding were a Mr. Thomas Stevenson and Emma Owen.

Henry was working for a James Nightingale as a Baker, at 442 Strand in London, Middlesex, in 1881. Elisabeth was pregnant with their first child, and working in the Spring of 1881 when the census was taken. I found Elizabeth Terry (21), married, born in Moulton, working for Victoria C. Probyn as a Cook at 23 Thurlos Square in London, Middlesex. The couples first child Ethel Terry was born in the later part of 1881 in Hackney, London.

The couple’s first son Frederick J. W. (possibly John William) Terry was born on May 22, 1884, in London, Pimlico. In 1885, they had
another daughter, Louisa E. (Elisabeth?) Terry. Then in 1887, Annie Sophia was born in London, Pimilco. Their fourth daughter Lilian was born in 1889, in London, Pimlico.

Elizabeth was very pregnant with Rebecca Hannah when the 1891 census was taken. The family was living at 9 Peabody Buildings in St. George Hanover Square. Henry was still working as a Baker. All of the children were listed as being in school. Their last daughter Dorothy Watson Terry was born at the end of 1892, in London, Pimlico. I assume that the “Watson” in Dorothy’s name is from her mothers maiden name.

The yellow area is where I believe the couple were living in St. George's Hanover Square, Peabody buildings

In 1901 the family was still living at the Peabody Buildings in St. George Hanover Square (R Block). Henry was now 48 and working as a Bread Baker. Some of their children are also working at this time: their daughter Ethel is working as a Waitress in a Restaurant (Inn), Frederick who is 17, is working as a Lavatory Attendant, and Louisa who is 16 is working as a Cloth Packer (W.O.P.) their other children Annie L age 14, Lilliam age 12 and Rebecca A. age 10, and Dorothy W. Terry age 8, have nothing noted.
