November 6 1655, St. Dunstan's, burial of John STREATER of Westgate Court 1800 Thus in Domesday, the hundred of Wesgate, and the manor of Westgate court, a principal one, belonging to the archbishop, are called the hundred and manor of Esture, and Sturfaete, from their situation near this river; and the manor of Esture, or Esteward, as it is vulgarly called, lying on this river likewise, about nine miles from Canterbury higher up, certainly took its name from it. Saturday, August 9th, 1794 - A stack of hay, containing about 30 tons, belonging to Mr. Samuel BALDERSTON, of Westgate Court, near Canterbury, caught fire, by being carried too green; but by timely assistance of the inhabitants, and great activity of the military then quartered in the city, it was happily extinguished, or the consequences might have been very destructive, had it broken out at night, and communicated to the adjoining stacks and barns.
