~ OFFICERS & COMMANDERS ~ 3rd (East Kent) Regiment of Foot (or The Buffs) 1886
The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) Formerly the 3rd (East Kent - The Buffs) The 3rd and 4th Battalions are formed of the East Kent Militia 1st Batt. Straits Settlements 2nd Batt. Egypt 1st Battalion embarked for Malta, 29 Jan. 85 2nd Battalion embarked for Cape of Good Hope, 3 Oct. 1876 Colonel Julius Augustus Robert Raines General Raines served throughout the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55, including the affair at Bulganak, the battle of Alma (where he carried the Queen's Colour as a Captain), the flank march by Mackenzie's Farm, the battles of Inkerman and Tchernaya, and repulse of the sortie of the 26th October 1854; served as an Assistant Royal Engineer throughout the siege and fall of Sebastopol (severely wounded in the Trenches during the bombardment of the 17th October), and present in the Trenches at the attack of the Redan on the 18th June (Medal with three Clasps, mentioned in despatches as "having served with zeal and distinction from the opening of the campaign, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie). Served throughout the Indian mutiny campaign in 1857-59, commanded the troops at the assault and capture of Rowa on 6th January 1585 (received the high commendation of the Governor and the Commander in Chief of Bombay in Council for "gallantry displayed and ably conduction gthese operations"); commanded the Left Wing 95th Regiment at the siege and capture of Awah on 24th January; commanded the 95th at the siege and capture of Kotah, and commanded the Infantry of Brigadier Smith's Column at the battle of Kota ke Serai; before Gwalior on the 17th June (specially mentioned in despatches by Sir Hugh Rose for "good service and assisting to take and hold the position of Kota-ka-seria")' and in the general action, storm and capture of the city and fortress of Gwalior on 19th June (wounded by a musket-ball in the left arm, specially mentioned by Sir Hugh Rose for "gallantry and taking by assualt two 18 pounders" and for "good service in turning the guns captured on the enemy"); present at the siege and capture of Pouree on 24th August 1858; and the surprise and defeat of the rebels at Koondrye on the 19th January 1859, (in addition to the above he has been four times mentioned in despatches, and marched 3,000 miles in command of the 95th Regiment in Central India, Medal with Clasp, Colonel, and CB for distinguished service in the field). As Brigadier General commanded the expedition from Aden into the interior of Arabia in 1865-66, when the troops captured and destroyed many towns and forts, including Ussala, the Fudthelis captial, and seven cannon (received the commendation of the Commander in Chief of Bombay for the efficient manner in which those successful operations were effected). Lieutenant Colonels John Blaksley Shapland Graves Lt. Colonel Graves organised for the Zulu war of 1879 the 2nd Regiment of Natal Native Contingent, consisting of two battalions, and served with Peasrson's Column, in command of the regiment, during the advance to Ekowe, taking part in the engagement of Inyezane (mentione in despatches as having been indefatigable in his exertions (Medal with Clasp) Frederick Taylor Hobson Colonel Hobson served in the campaign of 1860 in China (Medal with Clasp for the Taku Forts) Henry Thomas Halahan Lt. Colonel Halahan served with the 3rd Buffs in the campaign of 1860 in China, and was present at the action of Sinho and taking of Tangku and the inner Taku Fort (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp) Majors William Frederick Kerr Majors Kerr and Kekewich and Captain Hind served throughout the operations in the Malay Peninsulain 1875-76 (Medal with Clasp) Henry Drinkrow Harrison Major Harrison served in the Zulu war in 1879, and was present in the engagement at Inyezane and Ekowe during its investment (Medal with Clasp) Charles Edward Reeves Major Reeves served with the Buffs in the campaign in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76, including the action of the 20th January (Medal with Clasp) Waldron Edward Roper Kelly Assist. Military Secretary, West Indies Major Kelly served with the Buffs in the campaign in the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76, including the action of the 20th January and 4th February, and commanded the escort in the reconnaissance of the 22nd January (Medal with clasp) George Ernest Harley, Dep. Assist. Adj. Gen. for Musketry, York Robert Albert Hickson, Aide de Camp to Major General Mark Walker Henry Wallick Maclear, Adj. 3 and 4 Battalions (E. Kent Militia) Major Maclear served in the Zulu war in 1879, and was present in the engagements at Inyezane and Gingindhlovu (Medal with clasp) William Conquest Howarth Major Howarth served with the Buffs throughout the campaign in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76, including the action of the 20th January (Medal with clasp). Richard Stanley Hawks Moody, Brigade Major, Malta Captain Moody served with the in the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal with Clasp) Nathaniel Newham-Davis Captain Newham-Davis served with the Carrington Horse (afterwards the 1st squadron mounted infantry) in the Kafir war of 1878, and commanded a detachment of mounted infantry in the operations under Colonel Lanyon against the rebels in teh Langeberg, being present at the affair at Gobetsch heights.
