December 31, 1887 Soldiers and Sailors Institute proposed for Canterbury 29 r 4 f (Palmers index to The Times Newspaper) 1889 Prince of Wales Soldiers & Sailors Institute, G. Young, Manager 1896 - It was decided to close the Soldiers' and Sailors' Institute this month. The Institute had been in existence for eight years, and during that time it was the means of providing a comfortable club house for the troops of the depot.

Godden & Son Will sell by Auction, On Wednesday, May 20th, 1896, the whole of the well-made & useful furniture and contents of the above Institute, comprising a number of strong iron bedsteads with woven wire spring bottoms and wool overlay mattresses, washstands, with the chamber services, dressing tables and glasses, chests of drawers, Quantity of excellent blankets and line, Capital Brussells Carpet, Cromwell couch, telescpe dining table, 6 ft. Antique shaped-fron Mahogany Sideboard with brass galler, Fine-toned Cottage pianoforte in Walnut Frame (by Moore and More) equal to new, About 180 yards of best quality linoleum in excellent condition, The very excellent billiard table, full size by Bennett & Co. on eight massive mahogany legs and frame, slate top, in capital condition, with marker, cues, balls and lights complete, two billiard seats in leather. The large Bagatelle table on mahogany legs and frame, with slate bed, marker and balls, Harmonium in walnut case, several valuable engravings well framed and glzed, marble time piece, quantity of books and periodicals, Nine well made coffee tables, with ornamental iron stands and marble tops, large quantity of well made bannister back windsor chairs and bent wood ditto, a number of silvered plate galss mirrors in black bead frames, two mirrors in gilt frames, als the Three best quality roman body baths, with fletchers's patent instantaneous water heates and fittings complete, circular counter with the bar fittings, including Two costly plated urns (Tea and Coffee) with gas fittings to ditto complete quantity of dinner and tea services, glass and china, kitchen requisites and numerous other effects. The Goods may be viewed in the aftenoon previous to Sale from One to Four O'clock, on the morning of Sale, which will commence at Eleven O'clock.
