~ THE COUNTY WAR MEMORIAL ~ MEMORIAL GARDENS, THE PRECINCTS CANTERBURY Unveiled on August 4th, 1921 by the Marchioness Camden
Saxon Foundations Unearthed at Canterbury In preparing a site for the Kent County War
Memorial, within the precincts of the Cathedral, the excavators have
unearthed some interesting early foundations. It is believed that they
are those of the Saxon church of St. Mary Queningate. A mediaeval charter
possessed by the Dean and Chapter is said to support this theory. AR1921

The gate that you see in the background of the photo and below is the SANCTUARY GATE that used to be beside the Cathedral and the Old School House, which was moved in 1840 to the site it is in now as the entrance to the war memorial.
