Stories from Canterbury in the War
years
CANTERBURY 1942.JUNE 1ST/OVERNIGHT JUNE 2ND
The most devastating raid was on 1 June 1942 during the
Baedeker Blitz. I was 6.We could see the smoke from the City from our
home,my
Father cycled to see if my GrandMother was O.K.Broad Street, very near
the Cathedral.
The front of the house was Cheyney's the Scales merchants shop.
It had been on fire. Dad asked my Grandmother to come back home with
him.
Typically, in those days, she told him that the fire had been
put out, she was fine and not going anywhere.
