CANTERBURY

St. Dunstan

The houses in the background of this photo are from Roper Road. Why the men are standing here is still a mystery. We believe this might be the gathering for the start of a parade, possibly of ex. military men. They likely would have "paraded" down St. Dunstan's street, through the Westgate and ended up in the Dane John.

August 1913 - Canterbury Lad Missing - A Canterbury lad named Charles James Thomas CORNISH aged 16 years has been missing from his house at 5 Hanover Place since Thursday evening of last week. The reason for his disappearance is unaccountable. He has been in the service of Mr. Frank AMOS for about nine months, having been articled to the auctioneer, and in that there have been no complaints, he has apparently given satisfaction. For three years he was a pupil at the Simon Langton School, where he did very creditabley. Until just recently he appeared to be quite contented at home, but latterly he has had the idea that he would like a holiday, but his parents being unable to take him at the present time, he was given to understand that he would be taken later in the season. He left suddenly and it has been ascertained that he took a ticket from Canterbury East station for Holborn Viaduct by the 7:55 pm train. The lad stands about 5 1/2 feet, weights 12 st. 6 lbs, has fair hair and wears glasses. He was dressed in a blue serge suit, and carried a portmanteau containing two suits and underclothing. He left no information whatever as to his subsequent movements or the idea which prompted him. He has always been comfortable at home, although just recently he was annoyed through his father, who is engaged at the Swimming Baths, refusing to allow him to buy a motor bicycle. Scotland Yard and the police have been acquainted and other machinery has been set in motion. His strange behaviour is causing the gravest anxiety to his parents.
