~ LEWIS FAMILY ~ CANTERBURY _ Thanks to mark lewis for the loan of the above photo
"William LEWIS was born in 1836, in Newtown, Montgomery, Wales and died April 26, 1919 in the mental hospital in Canterbury. He married Charlotte GIBSON on June 27, 1869, at St. Mildred's Church, Canterbury. Charlotte was the daughter of Henry GIBSON and Mary STEDDY. In February of 1870, he was living in Wincheap Street, by 1877 he had moved to 18 Castle Street. He was a wool stapler's assistant in 1841 and became a woolsorter then a wool stapler by 1870. In 1881 he had changed occupations, and was a Commercial Tea Traveler. Obit (origin unknown, found in family bible).
Many residents of Canterbury will hear with regret of the death of
Mrs Charlotte Lewis, widow of the late William Lewis who formerly
for many years carried on business at the cathedral gate. She passed
away in her 85th year last Wednesday morning at Folkestone at the
house of her son-in-law Mr Walter, where she had resided since leaving
a house on The Terrace. Mrs Lewis was born at Godmersham Park the
second and younger daughter of the late Mr Henery Gibson and her mother,
who died in Canterbury in 1892 aged 92 years, was a member of the
old Kentish family of builders of houses and Churches-Steddy, of Hinxhill
and Ashford. Her death severs a link with one who loved the city of
Canterbury and everything connected with Kent. With great fortitude
she bore heavy blows of fate, among them that two daughters died in
early womanhood from diseases contracted during their work, and her
second son, Ernest Henry, a Royal Engineer who succumbed to the results
of his very distinguished service in the Soudan campaign under the
late Lord Kitchener. She leaves two sons, Mr W.G.Lewis barrister in
Law (the secretary of the Central Committee of Poor Law Conferences)
and Mr Arthur Arnold Lewis, MVO (Manchester) and one daughter."
