Motto "Veteri Frondescit Honore"....."With its Ancient Honour it is Evergreen"

An old photograph of a Buffs Soldier in my collection

"Canterbury is a considerable military station, being the head quarters of the depots of all the cavalry regiments on foreign service and of the Buffs (East Kent Regiment): the Royal Cavalry Barracks, on the Margate road, are fine brick buildings, forming three sides of a square and were built in 1794. The Old Infantry Barracks, sufficient for 2,000 men, are also on the Margate Road and were built in 1798; and besides these are barracks for horse and foot artillery. The New Barracks, built in 1811, provide accommodation for 99 officers, 1841 non-commissioned officers and privates and 481 horses. Here are also the head-quarters of the East Kent Militia. The Military Hospital, behind the barracks, is a plain edifice of red brick with stone dressings."

"About half-past eleven forty men belonging to the Cavalry Depot Brigade, under the command of Quartermaster Woods, and forty of the Royal Horse Artillery, marched into the precincts and rendered excellent service, both in assisting the local police to control the crowd and on the roof of the building."

Possibly a soldier of the Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles

This soldier has the same jacket as the one in the photograph by J. Craik above, with all the detailing, the helmet is similar to the one the bugle boy is wearing except for the crest looks more rounded (not star like), I cannot get a clear "close up" on the crest unfortunately

November 16, 1891 A fire at the Cavalry Barracks at Canterbury destroyed an extensive range of buildings, occupied as stables and married mens quarters. There was an almost complete absence of water, so that the progress of the flames was unchecked. The damage done was estimated at about 9,000l.

Saturday, September 15th, 1894, The Kentish Observer.

A WELL EARNED PENSION. In the retirement of Quartermaster Sergeant E. Raye, of the Buffs (East Kent Regiment), the Canterbury Depot loses a very popular non-commissioned officer. It is now 25 years since Q.M. Sergeant Raye joined the Buffs, and for the past seven or eight years, the Orderly Room has claimed his attendance. He is in possesion of the long service medal, and his retirement, on a well earned pension, is regretted by all with whom he came into contact. Outside his actual military duties, Mr. Raye was chiefly instrumental in the formation of the Military Lodge in connection with the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, of which he acted as Honorary Secretary. By his retirement from the Army he has had to relinquish that post, but his comrades in appreciation of his great interest in the movement and the success which had attended his efforts, on Thursday evening at the jubilee banquet of the Canterbury Lodge, presented him with a silver crust stand. Mr. Raye has been appointed to the responsible position of Canteen Steward.

HE DID NOT WANT TO GO TO INDIA

Charles Wickenden, a private in the 11th Hussars, was charged with stealing a quantity of pipes, the property of Mr. S. B. Pettit, tobacconist, St. George's Street, the previous evening. Prosecutor asked for the charge to be withdrawn as he believed prisoner committed the theft for the purpose of escaping going to India with the draft. The Bench allowed this course to be adopted.

DEPARTURE OF TROOPS FROM CANTERBURY

SERVICE AT THE CATHEDRAL

On Sunday morning the unusually large draft of troops who are about to leave the Canterbury Depot for India attended divine service at the Cathedral and the occasion drew an immense crowd of spectators on the line of march. The draft numbered 650 in all, and was made up as follows:

Depots._________________No. of Men

5th Lancers...................................96

5th Dragoon Guards.....................35

7th Hussars...................................90

11th Hussars...............................105

16th Lancers................................104

19th Hussars..................................95

21st Hussars..................................96

......................................................621

Officers..........................................5

Total............................................626

The whole of these left the Depot on Wednesday, and were accompanied by the following officers: Major H. M. Ridley (7th Hussars) in command, 2nd Lieutenant H. A. Johnston (7th Hussars), Lieutenant J. A. Daniel (11th Hussars), 2nd Lieutenant G. Franks (19th Hussars), and Lieutenant C. J. Clerk (21st Hussars). The whole of the draft besides many others stationed at the Depot, turned out on parade on Sunday about nine o'clock, and proceeded, under the command of Colonel Abadie, C.B. (commandant at the Depot), and headed by the Depot band, to the Cathedral, where they were awaited by numerous spectators, the sight as they entered the Cathedral yard, being very imposing. Some amusement was caused by the manly appearance of the "22nd Hussars" (The Boys' Brigade) who brought up the rear. As the men entered the sacred building the organist (Dr. W. H. Longhurst) played Mendelssohn's "War March" and other suitable voluntaries. The service sung was by Smart in G. and the anthem, "O praise the Lord" (Goss). The first lesson was read by the Rev. E. H. Pullilng (Chaplain of the Garrison), and the second lesson by the Commandant, Colonel Abadie, C.B. The sermon was preached by the Dean of Canterbury, who took for his text the parable of the sower (4th chapter of St. Mark, verses 26, 27, and 28).

The draft left Canterbury by two trains at about 8 a.m. for London, en route for Southampton, where they were to embark in the Vitoria transport for Bombay. The 4th Dragoon Guards, which are at present at Shorncliffe and are about to proceed to Rawal Pindi, will also embark in the same vessel.

We understand that the 18th Hussars were to have left Canterbury with the present draft, but, there being no room on board the Victoria, they have now been ordered to leave on the 26th inst.

Lieutenant Oakes, 5th Lancers, was also to have accompanied the draft, but will not, it is stated, go until the beginning of January next.

On Monday evening the members of the C.E.T.S. gave an entertainment at the Barracks.

This building stands in a field at the back of the Cavalry Barracks. It was erected in 1855.

The Military Infirmary

In 1811 this spacious building was erected on a eminence at the back of the barracks as a general infirmary for the various regiments. It is a substantial structure, and stands on one of the most beautiful and salubrious spots that could be selected for the purpose.

"Canterbury is a considerable military station, being the head quarters of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade and for depots of cavalry regiments serving abroad, and is also the head quarters of the 3rd Regimental district, and the Regimental depot of the Buffs or East Kent Regiment (3rd Foot) and the head quarters of the 3rd Battalion East Kent Militia. The Cavalry Barracks, in Military road, consist of four blocks of fine brick buildings, forming three sides of a square and were erected in 1794; they will hold 1,500 men and 450 horses. The Old Infantry Barracks, sufficient for 1,000 men, are also on the Margate Road, and were built in 1798; besides these there are barracks for artillery, available for 150 men and 266 horses and now occupied by cavalry. The Military Hospital, behind the barracks, is a plain edifice of red brick with stone dressings.

Canterbury is also the headquarters of the Royal East Kent Imperial Yeomanry, and the Band Companies of 1st Volunteer Battalion the Buffs (East Kent Regiment)."

August 2, 1913 - Lieut. Colonel Cordeaux, 21st Lancers, has been appointed to the Cavalry Record Office at Canterbury, in place of Major Hoare, resigned.

August 2, 1913 The troop in the Canterbury Garrison will not, we understand, take part in this year's manoeuvres, owing to the outbreak of mange amongst the horses. The Royal Engineers, who returned on Sunday last, and the Carabiniers, are encamped on the Old Park for the same reason.

August 2, 1913 - Military Outing. The staff of the Army Pay Corps, Dover, visited Canterbury on Saturday and were entertained by the local members of the Army Pay Corps. A cricket match was played on the Buffs' green, the game ending in a win for the homesters by nine runs. Scores: Canterbury 95 (Mortimer 21; Billson not out, 45), Dover, 86 (Stanley 28; Langworth 30; Harding 13) The party then proceeded to the Prince of Wales Institute where tea was partaken of, and thence to the Sergts.' Mess "The Buffs," where a smoking concert was held. The outstanding feature in this part of the day's programme was the selections by the A.P. Corps' band, consisting of six members of the Canterbury office, who rendered "Nights of Gladness," and "Il Bacio." Songs were rendered by S.Q.M.S.'s Croughton and Browne, Mr. Mortimer, Sergt. Major Binns, Sergts. Hawkins, Rollitt, McNally, Spittal, Lingden and Brown (Buffs), Staff-Sergts. Wade (A.O.C.) and Mann; bassoon solo, Mr. Mortimer, and recitation, Sergt. Major Habgood. A thoroughly enjoyable time was spent.

MILITARY SPORTS AT CANTERBURY

AN INTELLIGENT DOG.

CRIMEAN VETERAN'S ANNUAL OUTING

The annual sports of "C" Battery, R.H.A. were held on the Old Park on Wednesday and Thursday, a fine programme being gone through. The events on Wednesday were principally semi-finals. The proceedings on Thursday were well attended, the officers' and sergeants' enclosures being full of visitors. The two most effective items were the musical ride and the display. The ride was executed in a manner that evoked applause from everybody present, and was not without its thrills, especially when the guns were crossing diagonally at a stretch gallop.

The music was provided by the splendid Royal Artillery Band from Woolwich.

The display owed its success greatly to the intelligens of the Battery dog "Jack." The scene was supposed to represent a Bristish camp surprised by Boers. The camp was alarmed by "Jack" firing a rifle, which had been fixed on a tripod, by pulling a string affixed to the trigger. The camp turned out to repel the attack, and "Jack's" master was supposed to be wounded. The dog attracted help by barking, and on the arrival of someone to attend to his master raced back to camp and returned with a small box containing "First Aid." Afterwards he fetched a horse, on which his wounded master was carried to the rear. Joining later in the fight, he brought in a prisoner. He finished by taking part in a Victoria Cross race with some of the Battery (mounted), and brought back his wounded "man" to the winning post. Amongst the onlookers in the Sergeants' enclosure was an old veteran, Sergeant Bacchus, who served in the Battery in the Crimea action it was "C" Troop. It is usual at every annual sports of the regiment to send for the old veteran, no matter where they lay. His home is at Christchurch. The old man still looks hale and hearty. He enlisted about 1848, and left the R.H.A. on a sergeant's pension about 1869. He is the proud possessor of the Crimean medal, with clasps: Alma, Lukerman, Sebastopol, and Balaclava; Turkish medal, long service and good conduct, and meritorious service medal.

The Mayor of Canterbury, the Mayoress and Colonel E. Hegan, C.B., were among the company in the officers' enclosure.

The winners of the sports were as under:

High Jump - 1, Gunner Jefferies; 2, Gunner Goodchild; 3, Driver Mayson
