The last person in his will was not related but was his servant Elizabeth Sprall. Letter from James Ridout, of Canterbury, dated May 22nd, 1834

"In reply to yours as to the description of persons consuming bohea tea, I have to state that my trade is principally amongst the middling and lower order of people, and that my consumption amounts to about 250 chests of tea annually, and not more than one chest is of the bohea quality, and that is sold almost wholly to persons hawking tea about the country. The lower orders are more in the habit of using a superior tea than the middling orders and state that as tea is almost their only beverage they will have it good. I can say with certainty that the poorer people never drink bohea knowing it to be bohea, and I believe it is used to lower the price by those who send it out to shops that are not able to purchase for money. From what I have learned of the trade generally, the sale of bohea is not more than one in a hundred; I mean by the retailers."
