~ ST. ALPHEGE GRAVEYARD ~

CANTERBURY

The earliest stone remaining in the graveyard is from 1696 and this was apparently dug up while some renovations were going on.

Sicilian Soldiers in Canterbury - Between February 16 and April 18, 1808, nine Siciliana were buried in the parish of St. Alphage, Canterbury. Notes and Queries 1849

...For instance, in the adjoining parish of St. Alphage there are several entries of burials, both in the Cathedral and its adjoining Churchyard, the earliest being "the xxij daye of M'che 1558 was buryed Will'm Stephens in Christ Church yearde." Although there are many entries in the Registers of St. Alphage of burials of persons who died of the plague, it is remarkable that there is not a single entry in the Cathedral Registers in which the word Plague, or the equally well known letter P, occurs.

Sicilian Soldiers in Canterbury - Between February 16 and April 18, 1808, nine Siciliana were buried in the parish of St. Alphage, Canterbury. Notes and Queries 1849

*The Sicilian solidiers were possibly from the 52nd Regiment of Foot, as it's showing (on napoleon-series.org) in "1806, September they went to Sicily; Melazzo and incorporated a company of Sicilian recruits", and "1808 that Canterbury discharged Sicilians to foreign regiment; April received draft of 221 men from 2/52"

The epitaph on Agnes Halke, who died in the year 1512,

notices the custom of dancing in churchyards:

"In this churchyard was so her chance,

First after the hallowing of the same;

Afore all others to begin the dance,

Which to all creatures is the loth game."
